Upmarket south Chennai is not safe for women any more and tops the chart in crime against the fair sex. It is closely followed by the West police district in this dubious list. Statistics available with Greater Chennai Police show that at least 151 cases of crime against women were recorded this year in South Chennai, followed by 150 in the West, 70 in the North and 52 in the East.
Police claimed that the two districts — South and West — that reported the maximum number of crimes against women, have better policing, as a result of which a higher number of cases were reported and detected.
Women also boldly come forward to register their complaints and seek police assistance here, they said. In the areas that recorded lower figures, women do not come forward to report crimes, they claimed.
Crime against women is really worrying and police are taking measures to curb them, said police. “Incidents of rape, child molestation and dowry deaths, which have a larger impact on society, will be dealt with on a priority basis,” said a senior police officer.
The assistant commissioner of police, anti-dowry cell, Shyamala Devi said that “Police plans to start a mobile counseling drive in vulnerable areas of the city to create awareness. Counsellors will go to the areas concerned and encourage women to report safety woes.”
