Thane' kills 19 in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry; paralyses life

Puducherry/Cuddalore: Cyclone Thane passed by the Tamil Nadu coast early on Friday, killing 19 and throwing life in Cuddalore and the neighbouring Puducherry completely out of gear. Trees were uprooted, traffic signals ripped off their bases, shop signboards torn apart and tossed about. Broken glass from street lights, shards from window panes and other debris remained suspended on inundated roads. Mobile services experienced outage only to be restored much later in the day.


12 persons died in Cuddalore in incidents of wall and tree collapse and electrocution, officials said. A 45-year old man of Vanarampet village was among seven people killed in Puducherry. Authorities in Puducherry had wittily cut off power at 2 AM to prevent deaths from electrocution.

Ishrat Jahan case: Huge relief for family after seven years

THANE: The Gujarat High Court-appointed Special Investigation Team's conclusion that 19-year-old Ishrat Jehan was killed in a fake encounter has come as huge relief for the college girl's family in Mumbra near Mumbai.

"We have suffered tough times in the last seven years. Our world collapsed after the death of Ishrat (the eldest of the five siblings), but the people of Mumbra were very supportive during these times and vouched for my daughter's innocence," said Ishrat's mother, Shamima Kausar. She thanked NCP leader Jitendra Awhadfor "standing like a rock" by them.

RIYADH: A Sri Lankan delegation visiting Dawadmi, 380 km from the capital, was given a warm welcome by the Otaibi tribe leader Mohamed Faihan Shoraim Al-Otaibi on Thursday. The high-powered delegation led by Sri Lanka’s Western Province Gov. Alavi Mowlana met the tribal leaders of the Otaibi family on Thursday to seek pardon for Rizana Nafeek.

Across the world, Facebook users have been spammed. The spam is a flood of porn, violent images and other graphic content spread across the site over the past couple of days. This morning, came reports that two lakh users had been spammed in Bangalore. NDTV. Com carried a mid-day report; other Indian sites also reported on similar figures.

Teen raped in Goa hotels paid for with her money

Mumbai: "Please take me home," pleaded the 14-year-old girl, weeping uncontrollably, when Mumbai police officers rescued her from a Goa hotel. The Kandivli girl had been rescued a month after she was kidnapped, and then raped repeatedly by her 24-year-old neighbour. Crime Branch officers also arrested the girl's two kidnappers and brought them to the city last afternoon.

Two lakh Facebook accounts from Bangalore hacked, profile pics put on porn sites

Bangalore: Over two lakh city Facebook users woke up to a social media embarrassment yesterday morning as their accounts had been hacked and weblinks to their morphed pornographic pictures sent as feeds to friends and family. According to global media reports, more than 60 lakh Facebook accounts were hacked since Sunday night. Social networking analysts have claimed that officially more than 2 lakh Bangalore Facebook accounts were hacked.

India remains 'dirtiest' country, laments Ramesh

India remains the 'dirtiest and filthiest' country in the world, Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh said today, lamenting that people in many areas had access to mobile phones, but not toilets. Ramesh, who is also a minister for Drinking Water and Sanitation, highlighted lack of awareness about sanitation and expressed concern on the issue of rampant open defecation in the country, particularly in rural areas.

U.S. cuts funding for UNESCO after Palestinian vote

The Obama administration is cutting off funding for the U.N. cultural agency because it approved a Palestinian bid for full membership.  State Department spokes woman Victoria Nuland says Monday’s vote triggers a long-standing congressional restriction on funding to U.N. bodies that recognise Palestine as a state before an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal is reached.

South Chennai not so safe for women

Upmarket south Chennai is not safe for women any more and tops the chart in crime against the fair sex. It is closely followed by the West police district in this dubious list. Statistics available with Greater Chennai Police show that at least 151 cases of crime against women were recorded this year in South Chennai, followed by 150 in the West, 70 in the North and 52 in the East.

'3 lakh Indian engg. professionals likely to return home'

Amid uncertain job market conditions overseas, as many as 3,00,000 Indian engineering professionals are expected to return home during the five-year period from 2011-15, says a survey. Global workforce solutions provider Kelly Services India has said that more Indians working abroad would migrate back to India within the next five years, lured by promising opportunities in the country.

Over 5,000 children raped, another 1,408 murdered in 2010

As many as 5,484 children were sexually assaulted and 1,408 others killed in different parts of the country last year, according to a government report. Giving a gloomy picture about the crimes committed against children, the latest National Crime Records Bureau data says 10,670 children were also kidnapped or abducted during the year in various states and union territories.

Sixteen more babies die in WB govt hospitals; toll 29

Four more babies died at Kolkata's B.C. Roy Children's Hospital, which has witnessed a series of crib deaths, besides 12 newborns in the Burdwan Medical College, taking the death toll in two government hospitals in West Bengal to 29 today.
